Deputies Attend D.E.A. Class

Chief Deputy Paul Gann

Det. Steve Burgett

Recently, Mason County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Paul Gann and Detective Steven Burgett attended a federally funded, forty-hour, Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.) certified methamphetamine clandestine laboratory dismantler and site safety officer class. The class was held at the Carbondale, Illinois Police Department training facility and taught by instructors from D.E.A. contractors in hazardous waste management and Southern Illinois University. “When we found that the Southern Illinois Methamphetamine Initiative was offering this class, we quickly jumped at the opportunity for this very rare and important training,” said Sheriff Wayne Youell.

During the weeklong class, Chief Deputy Gann and Detective Burgett were trained to enter, evaluate, and make safe clandestine methamphetamine laboratories. The class provided personal protective equipment, valued in excess of $10,000, to the Mason County Sheriff's Office at no cost.

“Today, I am very pleased to state that the Mason County Sheriff’s Office has trained and certified personnel to successfully work our area’s clandestine labs not only to effectively collect the necessary evidence for successful prosecutions, but also to keep our citizens safer from the dangers associated with methamphetamine manufacturing”, said Youell.
