Sheriff Wayne Youell announced today that as a result of a no-match grant award for $18,900 from the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS), the Mason County Sheriff’s Office was able to purchase the necessary computer equipment to access the IWIN system. IWIN stands for the Illinois Wireless Information Network. The system is available to law enforcement via a secure and sensitive Internet site with the use of laptops. The ILEAS grant allowed Mason County to install state of the art, toughbook laptop computers in each of Mason County’s primary patrol cars.
Traditionally when a deputy in the squad car needed information about someone or about a vehicle, they had to radio the request to the dispatcher. The dispatcher would then retrieve the information from a computer and then disseminate it, back over the radio, to the officer. With the IWIN System, all of the information that is available to the telecommunications officer is now just keystrokes away to deputies on patrol.
From their patrol cars, deputies can use their laptop computers and have immediate access to not only vehicle and driver license information, but also information pertaining to a person’s criminal history, entered stolen items, and any outstanding arrest warrants. Youell said, “Deputies having the capability to instantly access this information not only greatly enhances their safety, but it also frees our telecommunications staff for other duties.”
Deputies are now also able to communicate instantly with other law enforcement officers throughout the State of Illinois. With improved communication, policing becomes much more effective. The mobile data computers and IWIN system is a huge leap for the Mason County Sheriff’s Office into the age of modern policing.
