Parents Warned To Stay On Gaurd For Internet Predators

     With the Internet being used more than ever, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office warns parents to pay attention when your kids are on the computer. Unfortunately, Internet predators are on the rampage and they are becoming more cunning and aggressive as they seek out our children. “One of the biggest mistakes a parent can make is to permit a child to have a webcam and high speed Internet access in their bedroom,” said Sheriff Wayne Youell.

     Sexual predators commonly use chat rooms to entice children and webcams to peer in and verify that they are indeed talking with a child. Once making contact, these predators not only ask the kids for pictures and personal information, but also will request the child to expose himself/herself on a webcam. Not long ago, an investigation revealed that a fifty-nine year-old man from the State of California persuaded a Mason County youth to expose himself during a private chat session. Within two days, the man priority mailed the child a gift that was valued at close to $100. “The gift was a way for the man to maintain contact and progress with the youth,” said Youell.

     How do you know if an Internet predator may be influencing your child? Here are some warning signs:

Your child spends an unusual amount of time online
Your child’s appears secretive when on the computer
Pornography is found on the computer
Your child receives mail, gifts or telephone calls from strangers
Your child seems withdrawn and distant

     The Mason County Sheriff’s Office encourages parents to contact their local police or the Mason County Sheriff’s Office if you believe your child is being victimized by an online predator.
