Mason County Sheriff's Office: Illinois Premise Alert Program
The Illinois Premise Alert Program (Public Act 096-0788) is a state program that provides public safety agencies and first responders with important information about people who have special needs. This program allows people to notify their 911 call center of these needs, and the call center enters the information into a Computer Aided Dispatch database if they have that technology. Fortunately for the residents of Mason County, your local 911 call centers have that technology.
How does this program effectively help those with special needs? The answer is quite simple. If a call is placed to 911, the address is entered into the Computer Aided Dispatch software. Any information pertaining to someone with special needs living at that address will automatically be displayed to the 911 telecommunicator, who then passes the information along to responding emergency personnel. For example, if fire fighters are responding to a house fire at the home of a person who is confined to a bed, they can be notified of the person’s condition before they get to the residence and they can plan ahead for alternative means of rescue. Or perhaps the police have to go to the home of someone who has a child with autism. By being aware of the child’s needs in advance, the officer will know that if he talks to the child he may need to speak more softly or avoid physical contact.
If you, a family member, or friend have a special need, or if you are a caregiver for or medical professional familiar with someone who has special needs, and wish to participate in the Premise Alert Program, you can acquire a sign up form at the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, or your local Police Department. Once you return the form, the information you’ve provided will be entered into the Computer Aided Dispatch database where it will be kept for two years. At the end of the two years, it will be up to you to renew the information or else it will be erased from the database. You will also be responsible for promptly notifying us of any changes that may occur.
If you have any questions concerning the Premise Alert Program, you are encouraged to contact Sheriff Wayne Youell or Sergeant John Windsor at the Mason County Sheriff's Office.
